Water Intoxication: Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Water?
Can you drink too much water?
Well, you might be surprised to hear this, but yes, you can! And people have died because of it. You don’t need to panic, but this is a issue you should be aware of.
What is water intoxication?
Water intoxication, also known as hyper-hydration or water poisoning, occurs when someone has too much water in the body compared to electrolytes. This happens when someone consumes a ridiculous amount of water, or during extreme strenuous activities.
Who is at risk of water intoxication?
Other than someone in a water drinking competition or underweight infants, people who practice endurance sports might be at risk, runners in particular. During a marathon for example a runner’s body is strongly dehydrated. He is encouraged to drink as much water as possible to make up for the lost fluids, but this is not always the best thing. If the amount of water is too large and he drinks it in a very short period of time, electrolytes will not be properly replenished. Thus, he can suffer water poisoning.
What are the symptoms?
- Confusion
- Cramps
- Fainting
- Death
Conclusions?
There’s no need to worry if you use your common sense. Everything in moderation! And if you’re planning on being in a marathon, try to hydrate yourself with sports drinks that provide electrolytes.
